Penn State Men's Rugby to Join Varsity Cup

Dear Penn State Rugby Alumni, Family and Friends:

I am excited to announce that effective Spring 2016, the Men's Rugby team will compete in the Penn Mutual Varsity Cup for the National Championship. The decision to accept the invitation to join this competition has been discussed with the Department of Athletics, Alumni Board of Directors, coaches, and student athletes, and everyone is supportive of the decision.

The Penn Mutual Varsity Cup is a post-season championship owned by United World Sports, who own Collegiate Rugby Championships ("CRCs") and sponsored by Penn Mutual (also a sponsor of the CRCs), a national insurance and financial management company. United World Sports has partnered with NBC to host this championship. The mission of the Penn Mutual Varsity Cup is to grow American rugby by harnessing the collective strength of intercollegiate rugby and college sports.

The Varsity Cup championship match is televised live on NBC. Our participation in the Penn Mutual Varsity Cup will add value to our program by increasing our ability to recruit the best student athletes, and increasing our branding opportunities and the name recognition of Penn State Rugby. Competing in the Varsity Cup will also allow us to maintain rivalries with Cal, Army, Navy, and BYU, among other institutions.

This announcement will not change our membership in the Rugby East Conference, which will continue to challenge the Men with a competitive Fall schedule.

I hope you are as excited as I am about this opportunity. The Alumni Board put forth a vision this summer for the program that was called Invest in Change. This announcement is an important step in moving Penn State Rugby and the sport of rugby into the future.

Roar with the Pride. Go State!

Event Updates

Tailgate Update: Due to no response from the University, despite multiple attempts and multiple avenues since last Summer, we will not be having a football tailgate this year. We apologize and we hope to get this back up and running next year! For those of you asking about a hockey tailgate, unfortunately their group tickets are sold out well into the future (years!) but we're hoping that something opens up for us.

Coaches Caravan: Newly hired Women's and Men's Teams coaches Kate Daley and Blake Burdette will be making stops in Pittsburgh and Philadelphia in early December to meet with Alums, parents and fans to share their vision and get to know everyone. Check your inbox for details coming soon!

Penn State Rugby THON Information

Hello Penn State Rugby Supporters!

Since 1962, Penn State Rugby has been one of most accomplished collegiate rugby programs in the country. With over 1600 active community members Penn State Rugby has consistently been fielding teams that compete for National Championships. Now it’s time for Penn State Rugby to give back.

Each year in the United States, more than 18,000 children are diagnosed with cancer. Through our involvement in the Penn State Dance Marathon (THON), Penn State Rugby is dedicated to creating a positive outcome for these children and their families.

THON is a year-round fundraising and awareness campaign that culminates in a 46-hour, no-sitting, no-sleeping dance marathon where students physically take a stand against pediatric cancer. Each year, thousands of students participate in THON by fundraising throughout the year and 708 of those volunteers will get the privilege of being selected to “dance” for the entirety of THON Weekend.

Since 1977, THON has raised more than $127 million for its sole beneficiary, the Four Diamonds Fund at Penn State Hershey Children’s Hospital, making THON the largest student-run philanthropy in the world! Last year alone, THON raised an astonishing $13.0 million for the fight and For The Kids!

Today, a donation to THON means that nearly 96 cents of every dollar is directly battling pediatric cancer. These donations enable the Four Diamonds Fund to provide outstanding care and comprehensive support to children currently undergoing treatment.

Please join Penn State Rugby in the fight against pediatric cancer by making a gift to THON today and crediting our organization Penn State Rugby. With your support, we can continue to make a positive impact on a child’s battle with cancer and work to create a future where all pediatric cancer is eradicated. Every donation, no matter the size, is making a difference in the life of a child.

In order to increase the impact of our awareness effort, please pass along this important message by forwarding this information to your family and friends who may be interested in learning more about THON. One day, when all pediatric cancer is curable, we will dance in celebration. Until then, we dance for a cure!

Penn State Rugby plays, fundraises and dances all for the kids!

Thank you for your support!

For The Kids,

Penn State Men’s & Women’s Rugby
