Penn State Teams Hit the Road for National Playoffs

FaceBook  Twitter

April 21 2018: Penn State Women vs. James Madison University – 10am EST

This weekend the women head to East Carolina University in Greenville, North Carolina for the Round of 16 and 8 of the USA Rugby national playoffs.  The women qualified for nationals this past fall with their B1G Conference Championship victory against the University of Notre Dame.

The Round of 16 will pit Penn State against Mason Dixon Conference #5 James Madison University. Penn State last saw JMU in the spring of 2016, a match that Penn State won decisively despite letting in two tries. On the other side of the bracket is Mason Dixon #1 University of Virginia versus Mason Dixon #3 University of North Carolina. If everything goes according to plan, Penn State will take on the winner, UVA being the heavy favorite, at 11am on Sunday.

Penn State will travel with an extended roster to North Carolina for the back to back games and rely on their depth to succeed. Forwards traveling this weekend include Rhyan Barnic, Maggie Carly, Ellie Fromstein, Fallon Joseph, Megan Lowe, Madison McCormick, Jessica Molnar, Azniv Nalbandian, Katie O’Hare, Kate Payson, Fran Schaeffer, Brittani Tompkins, Julia Anderson, Kristina Perry, and Corina Kaiser. The backs include Emily Barton, Kayla Canett, Gabby Cantorna, Rachel Ehrecke, Tess Feury, Corinne Heavner, Mindy Mckeehan, Sophie Pyrz, Darina Roe, Gianna Solomon, Joanna Suarez, Carly Waters, Claudia Norton, and Celeste Good.

Games kick off concurrently on Saturday at 10am at the North Recreational Complex at 3764 US-264, Greenville, NC 27834.  You can follow the action live on Twitter @pennstatewrugby and look for updates later in the day on Facebook @PSURugby.

April 21 2018: #6 Penn State Men vs. #4 BYU – 5pm MST (7pm EST)

After a scintillating first round of the D1A National playoffs we are down to 8 teams, facing off at 4 locations this weekend. The Penn State men’s rugby team, after knocking off Arizona in the first round by a score of 51-34, make the trek out to Provo, Utah to take on BYU in the quarter final match-up.

It has been quite some time since we faced off against BYU. The last encounter in the playoffs was in the final four in 2007, with BYU walking away victorious. The current team is prepped and ready, having had a great week of training in the build-up to the match, and will be looking to seek revenge for the 2007 loss.

The match is shaping up to be one of the most exciting on the weekend and we hope that you can tune in to the Rugby Channel (www.therugbychannel.tv) to watch the game on Saturday night. The players appreciate all your support and will be pulling from the positive energy near and far at kick-off time.

The other matches this weekend are:

4:00pm Navy @ Cal (streaming on TheRugbyChannel)
12:30pm Army @ Life (streaming on FloRugby)
4:00pm Lindenwood @ St. Mary’s (streaming on FloRugby)

More information about the playoffs can be found on the D1A website: D1ARugby.com

As always, our players’ extraordinary experience of travelling the country as they contend for national championships would not be possible without the dedicated support of the program’s alumni, family, and friends. Playoff travel is very expensive and the teams do all they can to limit them (the women will be taking an 8-hour van ride south). If you are able, we ask you to help defray the costs by sponsoring the players’ meals, accommodations, and/or travel pursuant to the below tiers.

Click below to:
Sponsor a player’s meals: $50
Sponsor a player’s accommodations: $100
Sponsor a player’s travel: $300

Checks can also be mailed to: PSU Rugby, PO Box 967, State College, PA 16804

Thank you for your continued support of the program!
