Round 1 of the Varsity Cup saw the Penn State Mens team travel to Cambridge, MA to take on Harvard. After a tough loss first round last year the men were all very eager to come out strong. Junior lock Ryan McNulty provided just that scoring in the opening minutes thanks to some defensive pressure form Seniors Zach Barnes and Malcom May. This pressure on defense with some solid attacking continuity allowed Penn State to capitalize on a number of Harvard mistakes and ultimately head into the half up by 55-0, two tries of which provided by captain Mike Eife who was just back from a hamstring injury sustained in Scotland. With a solid lead Penn State were able to empty the bench and utilize our impact players who did just that.
“It was great to see that the things we have been working on during training paying off and the boys put in a real team performance” said captain Malcom May. Final score was 100-7, with the crimson ending with a well earned try under the posts after some ill discipline from Pen State. Although the score line flattering, there is still a lot to be improved on. “As a program we need to ensure we are holding ourselves to the highest standards possible”. Said Head Coach James Willocks who went on to say “Thank you to all those who made the trip to Harvard and supported us, it was great to see so many supporting the Nittany Lions in the stands.”
With the victory over Harvard the Nittany Lions now prepare for a second round game this weekend v Army, kick off at 1pm West Fields State College! Army defeated Notre Dame comfortably in round one to set up a rematch of the tough Rugby East match up. This is the first home play off game for the men in (I’m sure someone out there has the exact date) in some time! The men would appreciate all the support possible as a win would then see us face the winner of Clemson v Cal!!
We thank you all for your continuing support of the program and look forward to seeing you all soon.
