Dear Penn State Rugby Alumni, Family and Friends:

I am excited to announce that effective Spring 2016, the Men's Rugby team will compete in the Penn Mutual Varsity Cup for the National Championship. The decision to accept the invitation to join this competition has been discussed with the Department of Athletics, Alumni Board of Directors, coaches, and student athletes, and everyone is supportive of the decision.

The Penn Mutual Varsity Cup is a post-season championship owned by United World Sports, who own Collegiate Rugby Championships ("CRCs") and sponsored by Penn Mutual (also a sponsor of the CRCs), a national insurance and financial management company. United World Sports has partnered with NBC to host this championship. The mission of the Penn Mutual Varsity Cup is to grow American rugby by harnessing the collective strength of intercollegiate rugby and college sports.

The Varsity Cup championship match is televised live on NBC. Our participation in the Penn Mutual Varsity Cup will add value to our program by increasing our ability to recruit the best student athletes, and increasing our branding opportunities and the name recognition of Penn State Rugby. Competing in the Varsity Cup will also allow us to maintain rivalries with Cal, Army, Navy, and BYU, among other institutions.

This announcement will not change our membership in the Rugby East Conference, which will continue to challenge the Men with a competitive Fall schedule.

I hope you are as excited as I am about this opportunity. The Alumni Board put forth a vision this summer for the program that was called Invest in Change. This announcement is an important step in moving Penn State Rugby and the sport of rugby into the future.

Roar with the Pride. Go State!
