Penn State Women’s Rugby Takes The World By Storm on Onward State

Men's Team Kicks Off Spring Season

Penn State Men’s opened their spring season on Saturday 3/28 with a gritty and hard fought win over Buffalo Men’s Rugby Club. It was a frigid day with persistent snow flurries and wind chills reaching as low as 10° when the A-side took the field for a 1pm kickoff. Penn State was not phased by the bitter cold scoring within the first minute of the game on an interception walk-in try (the first of two tries on the day) from the 2nd row and captain “Big” Dan Metcalf on their way to a 36-14 win.

As was to be expected the weather conditions combined with early season kinks from both sides led to a sloppy style of play for the majority of the game. Penn State struggled to handle Buffalo’s large and physical pack at the breakdown but had success creating line breaks consistently in the backs. However, it was the Penn State forwards doing most of the scoring on the day with the sensational up and coming prop Mike Washington delivering two tries and the senior hooker Tom “T-Bash” Bashara getting one of his own.

A scary moment occurred in the first half when wingers Sam LaPaille and Mike Eife collided while attempting to make a tackle after a Buffalo line break. Both players left the game but luckily there were no significant injuries on the play. Eife would return later in the game and prove untackleable for the rest of the day scoring a try on a line break offload from fly half Ross Morris who would later leave the game after sustaining a knee injury of his own.

The Nittany Lions played Schuylkill Men’s Rugby Club this past Saturday April 4th. They head to the first round of the D1A Playoffs at Wisconsin this Saturday April 11.
